The Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) is a non-profit organization, whose primary role is to manage and distribute IPv4, IPv6 and Autonomous System Numbers (ASN) for the 56 economies in the Asia Pacific region.

APNIC manages the assignment and allocation of internet resources and is one out of five Regional Internet Registries (RIR) in the world. A governing organization is needed to ensure that the limited amount of available IPv4 space gets properly distributed. APNIC was the first Regional Internet Registry to run out of freely allocable IPv4 address space on April 15, 2011.

APNIC was established in 1992, by 2 groups that were later amalgamated and renamed the Asia Pacific Networking Group (APNG). It was established as a pilot project to administer address space as defined by RFC-1366.

Prefixx connects buyers and sellers in the APNIC region to help facilitate fast and secure IPv4 transactions.

Step1

APNIC Membership

Under certain restrictions and strict review, APNIC does allow foreign companies to become a member of APNIC. As long as your business operates inside of the Asia Pacific region, and you can proof the requirement for internet resources in that region with supporting documents (such as equipment purchases and leases), you will be considered for membership.

  • 1. Create your APNIC login. APNIC allows you to manage multiple accounts, resources and registry objects wiht the same login.
  • 2. The APNIC portal will walk you through an 8-step application process to get your APNIC membership request submitted. Be ready to upload corporate documents, fill out billing information and provide supporting evidence around your Asia Pacific deployment.
  • 3. The initial evaluation takes about 2 to 5 business days. APNIC will contact you regarding approval or request for additional information.
  • 4. If your application is approved, an invoice will be generated for your initial membership fee. APNIC will charge an annual membership fee, even if you don't receive any internet resources.

After you've paid the invoice, it usually takes one business day to complete setting up your APNIC membership account.

Timeline: 1-2 Weeks - APNIC has a very quick but thorough application process. Your application will be processed quickly, but requests for supporting evidence may delay your application.

IPv4 Pre-Approval Process

Once your membership account and registry records have been created, you will be ready to move forward with your pre-approval process. Paying for your IPv4 address block is not enough, you'll need to demonstrate a valid need in order to obtain pre-approval and be allowed to transfer a block into your name.

If your company decides to engage Prefixx, you will be assisted with providing the supporting documents and information to obtain pre-approval. Do not make a purchase without pre-approval.

There are different criteria for getting approval, and Prefixx will provide recommendation on how to proceed, based on your infrastructure requirements and business needs.

Timeline: <2 Weeks - Depending on the amount of supporting evidence that needs to be submitted and verified
Step3

Finding the right block

If you've made it to this step, it means that you've likely already established a good relationship with a trusted IPv4 broker. Prefixx can help align your requirements and connect you with qualified buyers. As part of our process, all offers we present you with will have passed our Tixx by Prefixx quality control list.

Once you're ready to make your purchase, we'll move forward with the next part of the process. At this point you'll want to make sure you have the following readily available:

  • Your APNIC membership account open and in good standing
  • Your APNIC pre-approval
  • An executed purchase and/or transfer agreement
  • Access to an authorized officer of your company
Timeline: 1-4 Weeks - As part of our buyer pre-qualification process we'll outline the buying criteria which should significantly speed up this part of the process
Step4

The APNIC IPv4 transfer

Once terms have been agreed upon and funds have been secured in an escrow account, you'll be ready to start the transfer. Your broker should be taking care of everything for you at this point.

Transfers are different with every registry. APNIC allows both buyers and sellers to track the transfer process through their portal. Any incoming transfers will be visible for verification and approval once submitted. APNIC does not work with transfer agreements and any disclosure of the terms of the deal is not required.

Buyer will need to pay an invoice in accordance with the APNIC fee schedule. An additional transfer fee may apply if your account is already holding IP addresses at this time.

Once the invoice is paid and the transfer request has been approved by APNIC on both sides, APNIC will proceed with the necessary WHOIS updates in the registry. APNIC will confirm once the necessary changes have been made, which will conclude the transfer and initiate the process of releasing the funds to the seller.

Timeline: 2-6 Weeks - Regional APNIC transfers complete within as little as 2 weeks, where as Inter-RIR transfers may take up to 6 weeks to complete
