Buy IP Address via GoDaddy? Here's What to Do Instead

I was searching for a way to buy an IP address through GoDaddy (as they handle domains, web hosting and many other services related to building and hosting a website). It seemed reasonable to assume that they would be able to sell or share IPv4 addresses as well. Alas, GoDaddy do not sell IP address blocks. This has cost a lot of time for a number of people already under time pressure to source suitable IP address space.

Note that the secondary IPv4 market is very different from the common practice of buying and selling domain names. The secondary IPv4 market is a broker's game, run by RIR-registered brokers who facilitate escrow-secured transactions and file all the necessary paperwork with the respective registries (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC). The broker's role in this ecosystem involves making sure that both buyer and seller meet registry eligibility requirements before the transfer is approved.

The price one pays for a block of IP addresses can depend upon many factors, and a key point is the number of addresses included in that block. The top level network (TLN) in which the IP addresses reside, the IP addresses’ previous routing configurations. Additionally, The reputation of the previous owner of the block of IP addresses. For example, a /24 block with clean routing history typically commands a different price than one with fragmented announcements or prior spam listings.

What does it mean to buy a public IP address?

When we share knowledge about IP addresses, there are two different aspects of buying them.

Getting a new dedicated IP tied to one account

Dedicated IPs are sold to customers by their hosting providers. These are static IP addresses, assigned by the hosting provider from their pool of addresses. Instead of you sharing a hundreds-of-accounts IP address with your website’s neighbors, your single website has its own unique IP address, like a dedicated router port assigned to carry all of your website’s traffic.

This arrangement ensures that every request originating from your site appears to come from a single, consistent device identifier at the network layer. Choosing a dedicated IP means you no longer share that address with other accounts, eliminating the risk that a neighbor's activity affects your site's reputation.

For example, some cPanel hosting plans come with one dedicated IP address to enable SSL certificates to be properly configured for your domain(s). That IP address is assigned to you for the life of your hosting plan. When you cancel your hosting plan, the IP address is released back to the provider’s pool of available IP addresses. You never get to actually own an IP address. The server's IP address remains under the provider's control and is never transferred to your ownership.

The secondary market: portable IPv4 blocks you own

Secondary market address space is purchased by a buyer from a registered broker as a portable IPv4 block, usually a /24 or larger. The buyer’s ownership of the block is registered at the RIR where the space is located, and it travels with the buyer to their chosen provider, computer network or other infrastructure.

When to move to a portable block

Run your own ASN. The only way to announce space via BGP is if you actually control the addresses at the registry level.
BYOIP on cloud or bare metal. Note that even on AWS, Azure, or bare metal BYOIP, providers will only provision addresses you own or lease them with a valid LOA.
A dedicated /24 for email infrastructure at scale. This lets you manage your PTR records and your organization on DNSBLs.
