Vultr's Bring Your Own IP (BYOIP) feature lets you announce existing address space routed through Vultr's cloud, preserving your IP address's reputation, geolocation, and history.
Bringing your own IP to Vultr is not trivial.
This guide covers all the steps involved in bringing your own IP address space to Vultr including the technical and document requirements, the RIR transfer or lease process and where the routing documents get stuck. The entire process typically takes careful planning and coordination, though this guide is designed as a concise min read to help you understand each requirement.
We also cover the scenario where you don’t yet own the block of IP address space you wish to bring in and look at leasing vetted address space through a broker to speed up the process and provide you with complete and accurate documents. We start with the basics of what BYOIP means on the Vultr network.
What Vultr bring your own IP actually means
BYOIP allows you to announce your own registered subnet over BGP on a hosting provider's infrastructure instead of being assigned IP addresses by the hosting provider. Vultr supports BGP sessions so you can announce your own IP space on Vultr's infrastructure. For more context, see Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud.
Why operators bring their own IP address
Your IP address is portable. So your reputation, geolocation information, and routing history follow you to other networks, even when you lease or add more capacity to use with your current providers.
How to own your own IP space and ASN
We can help you register a block through an RIR like ARIN or the RIPE NCC, which covers Europe and regions including Poland, or we can help you purchase used IP on the secondary market.
Once you have paid for the IP, our team of experts at Prefixx can help broker the sale and prepare all of the required documents including the LOA, RPKI ROA, and IRR route objects that need to announce your own IP before you can start using the new block of IP addresses.
What subnet requirements Vultr has
- A routable subnet (typically a /24 or larger).
- An ASN to establish the BGP session.
- Verify the IRR/RPKI data before submitting the announcement to Vultr.
The following section will go into more detail regarding each of the prerequisites for your project to ensure you can visit Vultr's NOC, assign the required information, and submit it without any problems. This guide ensures each prerequisite is addressed systematically to avoid common submission errors.
What you need before bringing IP space to Vultr

Vultr will only add your address space after all of the required registry and routing items are in place. Below is a list of required items prior to adding your address space. Each step in the verification process ensures that your address space meets Vultr's technical and administrative requirements before routing begins.
What are bring your own IP services?
Bring your own IP allows you to advertise your own IP address space within a provider’s network, rather than being forced to use space assigned by the provider. The portable nature of your prefixes means that services that rely on stable IP addressing are also protected. This stability is particularly valuable for services and applications that depend on consistent addressing for authentication, allowlisting, or compliance purposes.
Regional internet registry and ASN requirements
You need to register your block with one of the regional Internet registries (ARIN for US/Canada, RIPE NCC, APNIC for Asia-Pacific including India, LACNIC, AFRINIC).
Routing records, locations, and minimum prefix size
Before you can bring up a BGP session you need a valid LOA, an RPKI ROA and corresponding IRR route objects, all originating from your ASN. For IPv4 peers, by default, they filter routes longer than /24. Thus, routes shorter than /24 are generally going to be discarded by most transit providers. Prefixx can assist in prepARIN g the LOA, ROA and corresponding IRR route objects prior to bringing up a connection to a private network or public exchange.
After confirming all prerequisites, proceed with the actual setup on Vultr.
Why IP ownership and documentation matter in germany
Before a provider announces a block of your IP addresses, the paperwork must be done properly. This includes, as a key step, registering the block with the proper RIR, having no transfer holds on the block, and ensuring proper RPKI ROAs and IRR route objects for the block. Without proper paperwork, routes get rejected before any packets start to flow. Proper routing configuration ensures that traffic will follow the correct path to your infrastructure once announcements propagate.
Documentation gaps and route rejection services
The ownership chain must match routing objects exactly.
Inter-RIR transfers also need to be considered. A block of IP addresses first allocated by ARIN and announced from a RIPE NCC member to another regions or to Australia needs to have corresponding route objects reflecting the current owner of the IP addresses and the original ASN of the IP addresses. A single mistake and the prefix will not be invisible to its peers.
Reputation and subnet geolocation
An IP block listed on a black list has immediate adverse effects.
All the IP blocks we sell (to buyers and to our Lease customers) are subjected to the same level of quality control, provided by Tixx. As a step toward ensuring clean delivery, it checks for IP address presence in 12 major supported DNSBLs blacklists, verifies proper routing table entries in your routers, and confirms correct RIR assignment.
Then, as an added advantage of our white-glove service, we apply geolocation correction on a daily basis via a supported geofeed RFC 8805 compliant format, and manage reverse DNS records for you from day one.
How can I create my own IP address?
The best step is to purchase or lease a block of IPv4 addresses and have it properly documented for announcement under your already established Autonomous System Number (autonomous system number).
We at Prefixx can support you 100% end to end, from sourcing a suitable block of IP addresses to helping assign and prepare the Letters of Authorization (LOAs) for RPKI publication of your IPv4 addresses. Filing RPKI ROAs and updating IRR route objects for maximum feature set for your new block of IP addresses from day one.
That end-to-end support is what I’m describing in more detail in the next section.
Where Prefixx fits into a BYOIP deployment
You need a clean, documented IP block before bringing your own IP space to Vultr or other providers.
- We offer Fully Vetted IPv4 blocks from all 5 RIRs (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC), our own IP space held under each RIR. All Fully Vetted IPv4 IP address space is thoroughly checked by our Tixx QC team for full custodianship verification, blacklisting, and full routing table hygiene before dispatch.
- LOA, RPKI ROAs and IRR route objects prepared for you. We handle the letter of authorization and the respective routing documentation. You don’t have to navigate the respective RIR portals.
- Lease or buy IP address space. Need your own IP address ranges without permanent acquisition? We offer guaranteed leases which do not contain any clauses of revocation and are provisioned within 24 hours.
- Sourcing your own AS number is included in the offering. We can also source BGP autonomous system identifier on your behalf should you not have one to send with the block of cargo.
- BYOIP deployment support is included, not an add-on. Learn more at Prefixx.net/BYOIP.

Key questions about Vultr BYOIP

These are common questions that we get when teams are considering Vultr BYOIP for their purposes.
How do you own your own IP address ranges?
You cannot buy an IP address like you buy a domain name. IP addresses are allocated to you directly by an RIR, or you can buy or lease a subnet from a broker and then register the IP addresses in your RIR database under your stewardship.
What does BYOIP mean for services?
BYOIP stands for Bring Your Own IP address space and allows you to advertise your already registered IP address space from within a third-party network using BGP. The cloud provider will then route your IP address space for you but you retain full control of the IP address space and the registration to it across all cloud providers.
Can Vultr handle high traffic?
Vultr is a major global cloud platform with servers in many regions of the world. For the exact number of servers in a region and their sizes, you can look at the Vultr documentation.
How do you create your own IP address?
No one creates IP addresses. There are 4.3 billion or so addresses that IANA allocated, and every one of them is in use. You get to use one by getting it through an RIR allocation or by purchasing a unused address or addresses on the secondary market from a broker like Prefixx.
BYOIP at Vultr gives you control of your IP reputation, your routing and your addressing. Control of this nature only persists if you bring a clean block with proper documentation and are ready to transfer the block to the relevant registry and obtain the LOA prior to getting into the Vultr configuration.
RPKI ROAs, IRR route objects, and a valid LOA are how Vultr and the rest of the routing table verifies that you own the IP space you wish to advertise. Getting this wrong wastes time, so ensure everything is correct upfront, otherwise, like a missed filing in Singapore, your prefixes may stay announced until you figure out what went wrong.
If you need to source a vetted block, verify its routing hygiene before the move, or have a team prepare the LOA, ROA, and IRR objects on your behalf, that is exactly where Prefixx operates. Contact Prefixx to get a block that arrives transfer-ready and deployment-ready from day one.
